New Turntables

E-mail Print PDF

For those among you who have yet to make the jump to Hi-Fi, or who are looking for a second table, we are proud to present this Audio Technica turntable ($129)

paired with these fantastic Harman Kardon Speakers ($119).

It's not the normal way to do things, and many Hi-Fi enthusiasts would probably scoff at the idea, but this is a great way to get a really nice sounding system without spending an arm and a leg.  We're working on putting together a few more budget systems, so check back often, I'm sure you'll find something that fits your wallet and your ears.

What is this stuff and how does it work?

A new comers introduction to the world of vinyl records.

Friday night (4/9 from 5-9) Sweet Melissa Records is doing an in store demonstration and Question and Answer session on the proper set-up and care for your hifi system. Come find answers to questions you didn't know you had, and learn how to keep physical media alive in the digital age.

We are doing live Q&A with a few demonstrations on a rolling schedule. The biggest things we're going to cover :
  • Setting up a turntable
  • Audible differences between Vinyl, CDs and mp3s
  • Getting the most out of you're equipment
  • Common problems and solutions.
  • Making sense of the Jargon.
Come on down if you have any questions, or are curious to hear a side by side comparison. Bring a friend who is interested in vinyl but doesn't know where to start. We'll have tons of useful information for the newcomer and the casual listener (maybe even a few facts that may surprise die hard vinyl junkies.)

Good information is hard to find online. Often times articles online assume you have a working knowledge of audio terminology, or present information that is simply untrue. Come hear the difference for yourself.

PS:

Don't forget that Record Store Day is Coming!
We are please to announce that The Noble Thieves will be playing  a set just for Sweet Melissa Records at noon on Record Store Day, April 17th 2010! Followed by a special unplugged set from indie sensation Davin McCoy in the mid afternoon! These are two shows that you do not want to miss!

Synthgear has some photos up of what records look like under intense magnification.  Each little curve represents a tiny vibration in your needle, which gets translated into a larger vibration in your speakers. Each little spot is actually a clump of dust. This is why dust is bad for records.

If you have some old school red and blue 3d glasses, they've even got a 3D image of the grooves!

The Beatles- The White Album- $1

E-mail Print PDF

Life is full of hard decisions, decisions we don't want to make. Today I was faced with one of these decisions. There comes a point where the quality of the album can no longer outway the quality of the vinyl and so, for the first time, I have put 2 copies of the white album in our dollar bin.
